Spotfire Integration Streamlines Data Visualization and Reporting

Spotfire is an analytics platform in which multiple data streams can combine into a visual, interactive dashboard. It’s very popular in the life sciences industry because it enables a user to gain more profound insights into her data. When analytics are set up, huge processes spanning multiple people and automated stations can be summarized with interactive graphics. Spotfire gives users the ability to report information and discover insights; however, getting data into Spotfire in a useful format is not easy.

Spotfire’s powerful features hinge on ingesting data. For scientific data that usefully means streams from multiple people, machines, and systems. One missing piece of data can render the big picture inaccurate, incomplete and ultimately useless. And for all of its capabilities, Spotfire is not a data wrangling tool.

One of the easiest ways to bring data into Spotfire is from the tired excel template. Perhaps your plate reader data and temperature probe readings are well suited for a quick copy and paste into excel and then imported into Spotfire, but shouldn’t it be easier? And what about instruments that aren’t online or don’t have data that are easily integrated or are highly complex?

Spotfire is dependent on scientists processing data into a usable format, which is a problem for downstream analytics and efficient science. TetraScience eliminates these challenges with our Spotfire Integration.

TetraScience works as the interface between data and your downstream software. Of course, this includes Spotfire visualization, but it also includes ELNs, LIMS and user-specific applications.

This architecture diagram details the data flows to and from the TetraScience Data Integration Platform. Specifically, it looks at the common use-case of visualizing multiple Empower chromatography data streams within Spotfire.

Let’s look at this common use case more closely. Chromatography data is large, unwieldy, and required for regulatory compliance. Scientists spend an average of three hours a week to get their data into a format suitable for Spotfire! This guarantees at least a three-hour delay before chromatography data is viewable. Not an ideal situation.

Create dashboards like this automatically using TetraScience data integration with Spotfire. This dashboard shows data streamed from multiple GE ATKA systems.

There are many use-cases for our Spotfire Integration. Instruments that are poorly suited for copying and pasting into an excel spreadsheet are prime candidates. Tetrascience centralizes and standardizes all data streams so that data, such as that from a chromatography system, are automatically compatible with Spotfire and available without manual processing or wrangling.

It’s precisely when there are multiple types of instruments, multiple users, multiple stations that data wrangling is the most challenging. Manual data wrangling and copy and pasting into excel are not an effective use of highly trained researchers.

Labs using TetraScience are visualizing data across multiple experiments, sites, and systems. Here is an example dashboard combining data streams from multiple sites and systems.

Once data are effortlessly compiled in one Spotfire view, Spotfire’s powerful visualization is available to end users. Scientists and informaticians are redirecting their time to more and higher-value analysis.
