Turbo-charging ADME / DMPK Data Processing

An interview with Larry Elvebak, Ph.D., Founder and President, Gubbs
December 15, 2022

Writing your own niche software because no one could offer exactly what is needed is no easy feat, but it’s exactly what Larry Elvebak, Founder and President of Gubbs, did. Specializing in developing software for ADME / DMPK discovery labs, as well as compliant solutions for FDA-regulated bioanalytical laboratories, Gubbs products are designed to streamline laboratory operations and data processing. We are delighted to welcome them to the Tetra Partner Network.

Please tell us a little bit about your background.

I received a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and a minor in Computer Science from Winona State University in 1987. I received a Ph.D. in Bioanalytical Chemistry from the University of Minnesota in 1991. I spent 5 years in the chemical industry and 5 years at the contract research organization (CRO) Charles River Laboratories. While at Charles River, I launched and headed the Computer Systems Validation group, a joint venture between the IT and QA departments, and was responsible for establishing and executing company-level policies and procedures for computer system validations.

In 2004 I founded Gubbs, a software company that provides metadata management and post-acquisition data processing software solutions for scientific analysis laboratory managers operating in the Discovery phase of drug development. In 2014, I founded a second company called LabIntegrity that provides a 21 CFR Compliant software solution called ‘StudyDoc’ to aid those in Bioanalysis laboratories to automatically generate accurate and reproducible GLP Final Reports Word or PDF documents.

In a few sentences, please describe Gubbs and why you started the company

Gubbs provides metadata management and post-acquisition data processing software solutions for laboratories operating in the Discovery phase of drug development. I started this company because, throughout my career in laboratory management, I often had to write my own niche software to help manage laboratory data because the larger instrument vendors did not provide such software. Thus Gubbs was set up to productionize and make that software available to the general market.

Tell us about your product suite, what makes it unique, and the problems it solves for your customers.

GMSU (Gubbs Mass Spec Utilities): GMSU is by far the most popular Gubbs Inc product. GMSU is a set of utilities designed to enhance the processes involved in data processing and results display for those using Sciex or Thermo Scientific mass spectrometry instruments and software being used for High Throughput Adsorption Distribution Metabolism Excretion (HT-ADME) studies. We have modules that enable calculation of Hepatic Clearance and Permeability, in which clearance and permeability data are calculated and displayed immediately upon chromatographic optimization.

MSM (Mass Spec Metrics): MSM is a software application that allows users to collect mass spec acquisition information and plot actual mass spec usage.

Gubbs ChromReporter: Gubbs ChromReporter allows users to quickly and easily format Sciex Analyst chromatograms and generate Microsoft Word or PDF documents complete with user-defined Figure headings.

How are your solutions helping customers enhance their throughput in ADME and DMPK?

In the past 15 years, instrument vendors have done an amazing job in providing instrumentation to allow users to acquire thousands of samples per day for hundreds of compounds per day. GMSU turbocharges the underlying vendor software (Sciex Analyst and Thermo XCalibur) and allows users to process and report their data in minutes to hours vs hours to days.

What is the value of Gubbs joining the Tetra Partner Network?

Joining the Tetra Partner Network allows Gubbs to help laboratory managers improve the discovery phase of drug development.  Customers can benefit from the increased data processing throughput with GMSU and the Tetra Data Platform. Our common customers wish to automate the flow of data from their mass spectrometry systems into the Tetra Data Platform; after the data has been engineered by Tetra, it can be analyzed by GMSU.  This combination of technologies means the elimination of manual steps, further enhancing lab productivity and compliance.
